His Mustache

When I was a child, my best friend, Johnny, and his dad lived next door to us in a trailer on a huge chunk of land. We rode quads, played in the woods, and swam in their pool. John Sr. was an attractive, kind, but quiet man. He had lost his wife shortly after Johnny was born. He worked a lot to provide for Johnny. The one thing I’ll always remember about him was his mustache and thick hair. My own dad had passed away when I was 5, and John Sr. was like a father figure to me.
One night while Johnny and I had a sleepover, I ventured out into their kitchen for a glass of water. I could clearly see their back deck that hugged their above-ground pool. John Sr. was climbing up the ladder to get out of the water. He was completely naked. This was the first time I had ever seen a man naked. I couldn’t get over how hairy he was. He wrapped a towel around his waist, opened the sliding deck door, and came into the kitchen. I was frozen, stood there with my mouth open. I was in shock. “Jason, it’s late. Why aren’t you in bed?” he said. I murmured the words “Sorry, sir.” and went back to bed. The image of John Sr. naked was burned into my memory. When I was 12, we moved away. I never saw John Sr. or Johnny again.
